my mission

“Learning Life from Scratch” is a collection of ideas about food in America. how it is grown, cooked, distributed and eaten. It is a manual, a handbook and a place for people to find inspiration. The recipes that I demonstrate here are not meant to be followed exactly, they are meant as guidelines for cooking to show that everyone can cook as long as they know how to utilize the ingredients they have available. I wish for everyone in the world to have enough time and money to sit down to a home cooked meal with good friends and family. There are few things in the world quite so uplifting and inspiring as dinner with the people you love regardless of how much or how little money you have. With a little effort we can bring dinner back to America, for no person can be poor who has the love of their family and enough food to eat. “Learning Life from Scratch” is here to inspire all people regardless of age, race, sex or wealth to bring the practice of growing and eating food back to the people.

We moved from Long Island NY to SC a year ago. Boy, what a difference (if only in the amount of traffic).

We have just over 3/4 of an acre and there’s just enough space for me to have a vegetable garden, something I never had in NY. Believe it or not there’s also room for chickens. The garden part I can handle (I hope). The chickens I’m not so sure about, but I’m going to give it a shot.

I love the thought of growing my own veggies since my kids love most of them. All inspiration is most welcome.

well done. i was raised on just under an acre in boise idaho and my dad managed a huge garden plus 17 different fruit trees. every year he calls me in the spring to tell me about how much work he has to do to prune the trees and get the garden ready. he acts like he is complaining, but its more of a bragging. then in the fall he does the same thing, but it is to tell me how many, tomatoes or apples or any other vegetables he has that he and my mother could not possibly eat. then i always tell him to hire some people to help with all the work, but he insists that he does not need help. this year he added 8 chickens to his upkeep. it his first time raising animals (aside from us kids and our dogs). keep growing for your kids because it was not until i moved away from my home and saw what other people were used to eating that i realized how lucky i was. thanks for writing.

Good work, as i’ve told you before you are the most cultured dude I know in the USA, and showing the simplicity of actually “cooking” your own food should open up alot of American eyes.
I saw some guy at the supermarket yesterday buying 8 bags of prebreaded chicken patties, I thought of you. Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!nyeerppppp
